Instead, late game Carnivores should be treated as an emergency back-up to Fire Warriors and XV88 Broadsides. While they have impressive health, they are outclassed by Mega Armoured Nobz and Assault Terminators in sheer durability, and they cannot hope to compete with Howling Banshees and Possessed Chaos Marines in damage output.
Late game, however, Carnivores fall back out of favour as dedicated combat units. Like the Carnivores, he will take advantage of the Cannibal bonus, whether or not he was in the squad when that bonus was earned. Adding a Shaper will further benefit them as well, by adding another 200 hitpoints per member, while also boosting their speed (And lending his more impressive attack to the squad). Though each unit starts with just 800 hitpoints, by the time they've maxed out their Cannibal ability they will sit at 1800 hitpoints per unit, making them tougher than Tactical Space Marines. Fallen friendlies cannot be cannibalized, and there is about a minute long window before the corpses become unusable, so one must act fast to capitalize. Note that this can be done on any slain enemy, whether or not the Kroot were the ones to kill them. Doing so will increase the maximum health points of all squad members (And will affect any future squad re-inforcements), as well as provide a small health boost. Initially, they are quite weak when compared to other Tier 1 melee units, however the Carnivores true strength lies in their ability to cannibalize slain foes. The primary close-combat unit of the Tau, Carnivores are available as soon as the Tau Barracks is built.
